No New Worlds – Art, Plymouth and History

BY YASMINE JELLEY (C) Lucas Voss During this second lockdown, many students felt an abundance of frustration as the university dynamic became instantly uncertain. Something that is quite clear is the fact that student experience will not be quite the same. With the majority of lectures existing online, having something to get out of the house for will be very beneficial. Between 4th September until the 29th November (American Thanksgiving), an art installation has been established to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the sailing of The Mayflower. In recognition of the history, the project has been titled 'Speedwell' after The Mayflower's companion ship. Set back from the eclectic energy that seeps through the city centre, small groups gather to review their most recent book club read; a tricky dystopian page turner that appears worlds apart from our own.  I think back to the last time I went to the theatre – I caught a one woman show at the Barbican Theatre on a whim after lectures one evening; it was raining outside so I was very...

I have been dreaming about this banana bread since I ate it years ago. When I go to my grandparent’s ski cabin in northern Sweden I always hope that we will visit my farfar's brother on the way home. They are so lovely. But as the food lover I am I can tell you that my farfar’s sister-in-law does the best banana bread in the world! I have never met anyone that has not enjoyed this banana bread. In recent months it has become a trend for home bakers, with its cheap ingredients and th...
