Your Student Representatives Up for Election Now!

BY OWAIN GULLAM Part-Time Officers and School Reps make up the Union Council. The Union Council is your voice to our Student's Union and University. How does the Union Council work? The UPSU is a Union that represents students and their concerns and wishes for our community. As all Union's work, the Union Council is one of many forms of control that students have over the Union. Other roles include the Sabbatical Officers which sit on the council and the forums. The Part-Time Officers run campaigns and forums to make changes within UPSU to direct it's policy, and provide a direct voice for the students it represents. From Halls of Residence and shopping centres to the statues on the Hoe, Drake is an integral part of Plymouth's history. However if you're anything like me, then your knowledge of British history is most likely limited to whatever was covered while you were at secondary school, and this knowledge may be limited even further if you didn't take History to GCSE or A Level. BY RORY EAVES Nancy Astor - Unknown photographer, 1923 Rightly or wrongly, I had never heard of Nancy Astor until I came to Plymouth, and even then I never took the initiative to find out more about her. I knew nothing about her being the first female Member of Parliament to take her seat, nor did I know anything about her vocalisation of anti-Semitic views. Considering that I studied Woman's Suffrage and pre-WWII Europe for GCSE history, it's quite alarming that such a pivotal and important figure such as Nancy Astor never once came up.
